exactly how unsafe is it to plug a computer into a non-grounded outlet?

  1. The surge protector can't do it's job if it's plugged into a non-grounded outlet.  But your computer will run fine.  It's only if something goes wrong that you run the risk of damaging the computer or you receiving a shock from ungrounded equipment.
