Question:

Plumber coming tomorrow! Need advice.

Hi,

Like to think that I am pretty logical, but here it is 'last minute', and I still haven't made up my mind.

I have a plumber coming in the morning to rip out my basement floor and install drain pipes for bath, toilet and sink.

What is the minimum size for a bathroom? Also, if I decide to have the plumbers put the bathroom further away from the main sewer drain, am I looking at a big price difference?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. A 5 x 8 bathroom is the best small size full bath

  2. Ha..I just had this done earlier this year.  I needed another bathroom in my house with three little girls who are growing up fast, so I put one in my basement....the rest is finished off as a family room mind you.  Anyway, to get back on the subject, I built a 8' by 8' bathroom down there.  Just big enough for a corner shower, a toilet, and a nice vanity and sink.  The main sewer line was within 5' of all lines that needed to be run.  And yes, it will cost you more the farther away you go since it's more floor that needs to be ripped up and more drain pipe that needs to be installed.  Price.  Ok, I had a drain put in for my shower, toilet, and sink, plus they ran all water lines, shut off valves, and poured new concrete where they broke up the floor, installed the shower base and shower walls, installed the toilet and I also purchased the toilet through them, installed the shower head and water controls which I purchased through them, set the vanity top, and installed the sink fixture...again purchased through them.  Total for all of that came to $4,800.  Depending on where you live in the world, it will be more or less.  Good luck and I hope this helps!

  3. ask if he accepts money in ways of love if he isnt married =0

  4. a bath should be at least 5x7, to accomodate a 5 foot tub, commode, and sink...

i would think the bath is the small potatoes, youre gettin drain tile? hes going to be jackhammering around your entire foundation..

if you move the bath, you may be looking at some additional jackhammer work, haggle w him on the price since hes getting you for all the drain tile

.....maybe you should consider having him do overhead sewers?  dont know where you live, but if you are in the chicagoland area, if you are in or near a flood plain, overhead sewers prevents sewer water from backing up into your basement.  youre getting a set of sumps and ejector i take it as well?  hes gonna love seeing you !!

  5. 1  1/4 inch is minimal size for lavatory drain. 1 1/2 inch on tub and 3 inch on toilet. The further from main means further to run pipe. More pipe more labor and more cost. Ask for his per foot cost, but also allow for add ons like going through walls, low work areas, cutting concrete and other circumstances that may hinder just an avg. installation.
