  1. It is called water hammer.  It is caused by vibration of the pipes, when water moves through the pipes.  Your system should already have air chambers installed, but over a period of time, the air can be pushed out, thus causing the annoying noise.  Try turning the main water valve off to the house.  Next, open all the faucets, until they quit running, then close all faucets and turn the main valve back on.  This allows air to reenter the air chambers, and will stop the noise.  Good luck!

  2. Bear is right, but it could be caused if the water pressure is not 100%

  3. you can either do it or have it done, its called expansion, they make a filter that gos in your water line that will prevent this happening, looks like a long copper tube w/either a standard hose fitting or sweat in fittings at each end,if you get the one w/stnd.male&female hose fittings you can install your self,it can be put on the cold side of your washing m'chine hook up,all it does is gives the water somewhere to go,and stops the noise.an inline supressor will work better, but this will solve your problem too.

  4. Add  an air expansion chamber to the water system. Available at home improvement stores. You may need a plumber to install if you are not able. About two hours plus service call. If this is already in the system then you will need to find the point in which they are banging and cut into the wall and secure the pipe to the wall.
