Plumbing question!??

can u identify this tank and how do i tell if somethings not working with it.

is it the radiator feed?

its in the loft, its only smallish, has a ballvalve with a cold feed, another pipe coming of it at the side, and a pipe that seems to pour hot water into it which comes from the other tanks.

why is hot water going into it from this other tank? is that some overflow?

im asking because ive replaced the ball valve because water was pouring out the overflow outside, but im now wondering if there is a problem with the other tank (why is hot water going into this small tank)

sorry this may sound very confusing- but if someone could explain that would be great.

  1. sounds to me like an expansion tank, the feed from the tank will go to your supply your heating system, the pipe that feeds over the top into the tank where the hot water is coming from is more likely to come from the top of your hot water cylinder.

  2. It is a feed and expansion tank for a central heating boiler, and If you have hot water poring from the expansion pipe ( the one the bends into the tank) can be caused by your central heating pump being set too high.Check         your pump and see if you can put it on a low setting. If not, you will need to have someone to find out what the problem is. If you have a plastic tank, constant hot water running in the tank can begin to soften the plastic tank and then eventually, the tank will collapse. The water running into the tank is central heating water, so when the problem is sorted out you will need to vent air from the rads.

  3. This tank sounds like your cold water header tank.  The pipe coming off it should be supplying the cold water to all your cold taps (the ones not directly connected to the mains) and as you use water out of these taps the ball valve drops and your header tank fills up.  This tank is purely to provide pressure for your non-mains fed taps.  The pipe into it does indeed sound like the hot water expansion pipe.  I am assuming that you have some kind of overflow from your header tank just in case it fills up to much?

  5. The tank is the feed and expansion tank for your heating system. the pipe that is discharging water into the tank is the expansion pipe from your heating. There are a few reasons why its doing this, one could be that your heating pump is set too high(there is a small switch on the side of the pump, try turning it down a notch). Another reason could be that the water heated by your boiler is too hot, this would cause the over-hot water to expand into the tank. check your cylinder thermostat isnt set too high or faulty.
