My toilet keeps having some water running sound, but when i opened the tank, i don't see any water dripping or ripples.. neither do I see the toilet bowl itself. Where does the sound come from and how do I fix it?

  1. In my experience as a do it yourself plumber, the sound of running water after the bowl is full is caused by the rubber flapper in the bottom of the back tank not closing correctly.

It can just be old and worn out or something can be caught under it.  Also, sometimes the chain connecting the handle to the flapper gets tangled and gets too short.  So instead of letting the flapper fall down into the outlet pipe, it holds it up too much.  So check the chain too.

Turn off the water to the toilet. Flush it. And check the flapper.  If necessary, just replace it, very easy and it should be good to go.

Turn the water back on and it should be fixed.

  2. This is a sign of a leaking flapper and the fill-valve replenishing the water in the tank. take a couple cups of black coffee (liquid only, no grounds) and pour it in the tank. watch the bowl for a couple hours. If the water changes colors, the flapper is leaking. Some people use food coloring but it sometimes stains the tank.
