  1. You need to have your own bank account!  It is becoming more and more difficult to cash a check if you do not have an account at that bank.  Even if the check was written on a local bank, many banks no longer cash checks for non-customers, and those that do will require TWO IDs, such as driver's license and another ID, or student ID and passport.  Grocery stores have largely stopped cashing checks, and to do it, you need to fill out a form, give them 2 IDs plus your SSN, etc. and it takes them up to 2 weeks before they will approve check cashing privileges.  Check cashing places only take pre-printed payroll or govt checks, no personal checks and no hand-written checks.

Credit IRS and Treasury Dept "know your customer" rules and more stringent reporting requirements.

With this check and another $50, you should be able to open a bank account if you have proper IDs.

  2. If the check is from a bank you have there, they will cash it because it is one of theirs.  Grocery stores sometimes will but may charge you.

  3. ur parents can cash it for you then deposit it to their account.

  4. Depends on the type of check.  This should teach you the importance of having a relationship with a bank or credit union.

  5. Find the bank that the check was written against and take it there.  They will usually cash the check with your ID and your fingerprint.
