  1. Get used to being cold, wet, tired and bored.  And see how many of the old Rig-Dogs are missing a few fingers.  It's a hard, harsh life.  It's well-paid, but it should be.

  2. Kane, I suggest that you talk to someone in the oil business and see what you can find out about the jobs. I would think that some experience with drilling/production rigs on land would be a prerequisite for work on an oil rig. There are also a lot of  specialty jobs on rigs.

  3. it depends on what you want to do on the rig.

if you have joinery experience then you can get offshore jobs with accomodation outfitters like Aramark or Aberdeen based Aiken Offshore. they do renovation and new build.

otherwise you can go for the engineering/construction side of rig life and go in as a pipefitter or welder or electricians

other regular jobs are riggers and scaffolders.

the technical side of things include fire and gas systems, hvac etc.

really the list is endless, but some are specialised.

most host companies have open days,(shell, bp, marathon, chevron, etc) that you can go along to and speak to and find out more about offshore jobs.

my one and only bit of advice for you is if you decide on wearing coveralls for a living then go for the engineers position and keep them clean, let others do the dirty work for you. !!!!!
