  1. Hey there,

I was super confused at first. Pass all the mumbo-jumbo and check out http://voip-reviewer.com - I went with their top rated provider and it's easy-peasy!

Hope that helps and good luck!

  2. There are two primay ways to access VoIP service:

    1 - via your PC

2 - using an ATA (analog telephone adapter) and you regular telephone  - (no PC)

    1) - To use a PC, there are two primary methods:

        a)  Use a pre-configured softphone (locked)

        b)  Use a user-configurable softphone (unlocked)

Softphones require you to download and install softphone software.

To use a softphone on your PC, you generally require a headset and microphone.

1a) - Some examples of VoIP services that offer free downloadable pre-configured softphones are:

    - Skype

    - Gizmo5

    - Yahoo Voice

    - Efonica

    - PcCall

    - CallCentric

    - InPhonex

All the above services offer a softphone that is pre-configured to operate "only" with their VoIP service.  This way is easy to get going without getting bogged down with technical configuration issues.

    1b) - User configurable softphones:

User-configurable softphones come in free and paid downloadable software.  User-configureable softphones can be configured for use with ANY SIP-based VoIP service.

Some examples of Free downloadable user-configurable SIP-based softphones are:

    - 3CX VoIP Client, by 3CX corp. (my personal top-pick)

    - WengoPhone, by OpenWengo.org

    - Express Talk, by NCH Software

    - X-Lite, by Counterpath corp.

Example of permium paid-for softphones are the eyeBeam and Bria softphones by CounterPath Corp.

All the above mentioned User-Configurable softphones can be configured for use with low-cost, pay-as-you-go, and no contracts VoIP services like:

    CallCentric

    InPhonex

    Voip.ms

    Les.net

    2)

If you don't want to use a PC for VoIP, then an ATA is the way to go.

This way you can talk over a regular phone plugged into the ATA, which then plugs directly into your Internet Router or Modem.

VoIP ATA's can also be obtained as:

    2a) - pre-configured (locked)

    2b) - User-Configureable (unlocked)

    2a)

VoIP services like Packet8,Vonage, Lingo, Voip.com, etc., typically supply you with a "pre-configured" (locked) VoIP ATA that only works with their service.

Services that provide you with their "pre-configured" ATA tend to be higher priced, but easy to use and get started.

    2b)

User-Configurable ATA's (unlocked) allow you to connect your VoIP box to any SIP-based VoIP service that allows BYOD (bring your own device).  It takes a little more user technical ability to self-configure your ATA box.  But, in the end, it is much cheaper, and flexible,  this way.

The BYOD VoIP services I use are:

    CallCentric

    InPhonex

    Voip.ms

    Les.net

Two examples of user-configurable ATA's are:

    - Linksys PAP2T-NA (ATA only - no built-in router)

    - Linksys SPA-2102  (ATA + built-in router)

I would recommend the SPA-2102 for most people.

    I currently use the PAP2T-NA 2-Line ATA behind my Linksys WRT-54G NAT-Router.

I configured Line-1 for InPhonex service, and

    Line-2 is configured for CallCentric.

So, I now have one VoIP box that works with two separate VoIP services.  I can switch service providers at any time because these services are only pay-as-you-go, and No Contracts.

Good luck getting started with VoIP.

Regardless of how you VoIP, you will need a good and reliable High-Speed Internet connection.
