So im a volleyball player, and during practise today. Im a jump server and one time i threw the ball to much into the court, and i tried to hit it. I hit it and made it over, but hitting it i twisted my sholder and arm kind of in. And my sholder poped really really loud. And hurt really really bad. Like i couldnt even try to lift it. Then after awhile the pain dulled and i tried resting it for a while and then tried the serve again and it kept poping and hurting really bad. So What is it? It hurts bad but i can move it. Is there anything that can help it? Ice, rest? I need it healed by volleyball practise tommarow. Anything will help. what do you think happened? Also i have no insurance (cant see a doc) and dnt want to tell my dad becuause theres enough stuff wrong in my family, so if theres a way i can fix it myself thad be great.

  1. If there was a pop then you probably dislocated your shoulder. I've played volleyball for many years and have seen people get dislocated joints, at which point it isn't too hard for a trained coach or physician to pop into place. I once saw a guy get a joint popped back into place and he finished the game, though I don't think that that's a good idea. As to fixing it yourself I wouldn't recommend it, because if you do it improperly it will only make itworse. If you play on a volleyball team then hopefully your coach has medical training or your school nurse can fix it for you.

On another note, it might not even be dislocated. Sometimes a sprain can make a popping noise if you have rough joints. I've gotten a bad sprain before where I heard a noise, but it wasn't very loud so I don't think my situation is the same as yours. Try to keep it as stable as possible (with a sling, you can buy a cheap one at a drugstore or athletics store) and don't definitely don't play volleyball.

My best piece of advice for you is really to get some medical attention. I know that's hard without health insurance but see if your coach or any of your friends knows anyone. If you really can't find anyone, get some sort of brace and don't move it for awhile. After a few days see how it feels. If the pain is different then it might just be a sprain and if you rest it it will get better in a few weeks. If it still feels exactly the same then it's probably dislocated and you need to seek medical attention.

  2. You should take some time off.  I have no idea how much time, which seems not to matter anyway, since athletes usually ignore any advice from healthcare workers telling them to take it easy.

There is no way for us to know what it is.  It could be tendon, ligament, muscle, bone, any of the 7 joints in the shoulder area.

If you can't see a doc, ask an athletic trainer (if your school has one) or ask a coach if your school has an arrangement with a sports clinic where you can get free or reduce price treatment.

You are not going to get a good answer from the internet.  Someone has to actually see it.

    Bummer, sorry,

  3. Personally, I would just follow the rice method and visit a doctor.

    RICE

    REST

    ICE

    COMPRESSION

    ELEVATION
