when a wire of length 10mt is subjected to a force of 100n along its length,the lateral strain producd is (0.01)(-1000)mt.its poisson's ratio is 0.4.if area of cross section is 0.025mt sq.it's young's modulus is??????????????

youngs modulus = stress/strain,

or E = σ / ε

Stress = σ= force/area

Strain εx = δ L / L

poison's = -εx/εy

The lateral strain number is wrong. It should be something like 0.001 or 0.0001.

Get strain first: lateral strain / 10m

Then, get change in wire area from poisson's formula above.

Should be diameter decreases by about 0.0001 or so. Area is pi* D*D/4, so figure new area.

Then, use area to get stress for 100N. Finally, divide stress by strain to get E.
