My son who is 12-13 years old has requested for pocket money. Is it appropriate to give pocket money to kids? What do you do? What happens if you do not give pocket money to kids and why do you allow them the pocket money?

  1. If you give pocket money, he should begin paying for his own toys, books, movies, etc. If you don't he should pay for this stuff. I give my 12 year old $10 a week.

  2. there was no extra money in my family so we never recieved pocket money from our parents. However I had an elderly neighbor who cut hisown grass and always seemed to struggle a bit in the hot weather so I offered to cut it for him for 10 dollars. He got his grass cut I earned my pocket money.

in my opinion it should not be handed out but earned. Have your child help with washing windows or something that wouldnt be a normal chore to earn the pocket money

I used my pocket money to buy jewlery, soda's, snacks, you know the normal teen stuff. I would also save some of it so if we went on vacation I had my own money to spend ( again there wasnt alot of extra money in the family so we never really bought souviners when we went on vacation)

  3. For most of my life, I didn't have an allowance--I could earn money on a case-by-case basis when I did chores around the house, but I didn't get any money automatically each week. When I was sixteen, it finally occurred to me that most parents give their kids a weekly allowance, so I asked for five dollars a week. They gave it to me.

The amount you give your kid should depend on how responsible he is. At this age, give him perhaps three dollars a week; as he gets older, increase the amount. At twelve, he doesn't need that much spending money.

  4. Do you not know the age of your kid? Sad.

Anyway, I will occasionally give pocket money but there are always conditions to the money...no junk food, nothing obscene, etc...and my son is 11. It teaches them money management and making good decisions while shopping. BTW- He has to earn the pocket money most of the time.

  5. My 7 year-old daughter gets 5 dollars a week, with the ability to earn more by doing extra things.  The requirement that I have is, that I have final veto power on anything she buys, just to ensure that everything is age appropriate, and she has to save at least 2 dollars a month and put it in her savings.  She can put more in there if she wants, and I add to it regularly, too.  She's pretty good, thinks purchases through, and saves money to do special things, like go to Build-A-Bear.  And if she's invited anywhere with friends, such as to a movie, I give her extra money, too.

  6. No.  kids can be cruel they might hurt your child if they find out he has some money.  wait till he gets home and then give it to him.

  7. wtf is pocket money? like allowance?

Ya a 13 year old should have an allowance

  8. I'd say give him $20/week if he has done all his chores, then take him to the bank to put half of the money in his college account, and he can choose to keep the rest or put it in a savings account at the bank as well for him to spend later.

  9. im 12 i get an allowence of 10 every 2 weeks. dont let him blow it  every time he gets some. but if he has 20-30 dollars that have been sitting around let him blow it on something. then if hes mad he blew it teach him that he needs to be responsible with his money. i blew 30 at chuck e cheese for my step bro and sis b-day party but im not mad about it cus i had fun

  10. a little pocket money is ok start out small 3-5 dollars if he is not going any where than let him earn higher limits

  11. 12, 13, something like that. ;)

Yeah, you're late with allowance by about 5 years.  In my family we link it to chores like making the bed in the morning before school, cleaning their rooms, giving the cat fresh water every day, setting the table, etc.

  12. the most should be a dollar. I never had pocket money until I got a job. My parents told me you have to work to have pocket money.

    Hope this helps,

    would rather be deer hunting

  13. I'm with the lady that said $20 per week and have him split it into a college account. This way he can see where his money is going.

  14. Pocket money is okay if they earn it. It depends on how much you give them too because some of them tend to lose it at school.

Some kids, if you don't give them pocket money will resort to stealing not just money but items too. I guess that's probably why some kids are given pocket money. Other times it's so they can save it up and buy something that they want.
