Podium finishes key to title, says Fernando Alonso
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who enters the Singapore Grand Prix on the wings of his Monza victory, believes that a continuous podium finish will be enough to grant any of the top five drivers the 2010 Formula
One championship crown.
The 29-year-old made a soaring comeback into the title contention earlier this month with his dramatic win in Monza, with promoted him to third in the championship standings. Yet with five drivers and
three teams in close proximity to one another, consistent podium finishes could be enough to see any one driver through to the top.
“The driver who gets five podiums in five races will be very close to the title, because consistency has not been the strongest point for anyone this year," Alonso told reporters in Singapore. “It has
been up and down for everybody. Webber now has 187 [points] after 14 races, which is an average of 14 points, which means that with five third positions it would be more than the average.”
He added, “What we need is to do good races, and for sure now a DNF (Did Not Finish) would mean bye bye to the championship because there are few races left. So as I said, five podiums would be good for
us.”
Ferrari has enjoyed a streak of success in the last four races, consistently earning high-scoring finishes. And while the Spaniard is cautious about revelling in the good results, he also understands the
value of thriving on the energy which is gaining Ferrari a serious advantage.
“After winning in Monza for us this race is important to keep the momentum,” he stated. "To keep doing well and with a high motivation for everybody. So doing well here would be a continuation of the Monza
success that [is] good for us.”
Alonso currently has 166 points in the driver’s championship, a mere 21points off of leader Mark Webber of Red Bull and 16 from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton.
