We are having a secular wedding and as we are fans or Tolkein can anyone suggest a good paragraph from the books which would be suitable for a reading at the ceremony?

  1. I find it strange that people say things like "not a lot of Tolkien's works centered on love or marriage or friendship" if they have actually read the books.  They are full of love and friendship.

    Sorry, don't have the books with me, but how about when Arwen and Aragorn meet in Rivendell?  Or near the end when they get married.

  2. Honestly, when I read this I got weepy!

    An excerpt from " The Two Towers : Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien

    ENT: When Spring unfolds the beechen leaf, and sap is in the bough;

    When light is on the wild-wood stream, and wind is on the brow;

    When stride is long, and breath is deep, and keen the mountain-air,

    Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is fair!

    ENTWIFE.: When Spring is come to garth and field, and corn is in the blade;

    When blossom like a shining snow is on the orchard laid;

    When shower and Sun upon the Earth with fragrance fill the air,

    I*ll linger here, and will not come, because my land is fair.

    ENT.: When Summer lies upon the world, and in a noon of gold

    Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves the dreams of trees unfold;

    When woodland halls are green and cool, and wind is in the West,

    Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is best!

    ENTWIFE. : When Summer warms the hanging fruit and burns the berry brown;

    When straw is gold, and ear is white, and harvest comes to town;

    When honey spills, and apple swells, though wind be in the West,

    I*ll linger here beneath the Sun, because my land is best!

    ENT.: When Winter comes, the winter wild that hill and wood shall slay;

    When trees shall fall and starless night devour the sunless day;

    When wind is in the deadly East, then in the bitter rain

    I*ll look for thee, and call to thee; I*ll come to thee again!

    ENTWIFE : When Winter comes, and singing ends; when darkness falls at last;

    When broken is the barren bough, and light and labour past;

    I*ll look for thee, and wait for thee, until we meet again:

    Together we will tkae the road beneath the bitter rain!

    BOTH : Together we will take the road that leads into the West,

    And far away will find a land where both our hearts may rest.

  3. It's your wedding... if it brings you joy or has a significant spiritual or special meaning for you and your spouse.... theres no reason not too!!.. Good luck, congrats

  4. That's tough, not a lot of Tolkien's works centered on love or marriage or friendship. But here are some of my favorites:

    "All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost. The old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by frost."

    "The Road goes ever on and on

    Out from the door where it began.

    Now far ahead the Road has gone,

    Let others follow it who can!

    Let them a journey new begin!"

    (incomplete but a good tome about a journey, in your case marriage...)

    "A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day." ~ Aragorn

    "Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens." - Gimli, The Two Towers

    (Perhaps about the strength of your bond?)

    "'Eowyn, Eowyn, White Lady of Rohan, in this hour I do not believe that any darkness will endure!' And he stooped and kissed her brow. And so they stood on the walls of the City of Gondor, and a great wind rose and blew, and their hair, raven and golden, streamed out mingling in the air. And the Shadow departed, and the Sun was unveiled, and the light leapt forth..."

    (Pretty romantic...)

    That's all I've got. It was tough but I enjoyed the search!

    Good luck.

  5. I was going to say something about the whole "one ring..." thing, but then in occured to me that secular doesn't mean cheesy.

    So I give you this, said by Bilbo in "Many Partings"

    The road goes ever on and on, Out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, let others follow it who can. Let them a journey new begin, but I at last with weary feer will turn towards the lighted inn, My evening-rest and sleep to meet.

    Something about new beginnings I think.

    Congradulations.

    EDIT: I WAS BEATEN TOO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!lol

    "I would rather spend one lifetime with you than all the ages of this world alone"... Arwen

  7. One of my favorite passages is:

    The Road goes ever on and on

    Down from the door where it began.

    Now far ahead the Road has gone,

    And I must follow, if I can,

    Pursuing it with eager feet,

    Until it joins some larger way

    Where many paths and errands meet.

    And whither then? I cannot say.

    But I don't know that it's suitable for a wedding...?

  8. To be frank if i went to a wedding and tolkein was what was quoted, I'd find it hilarious so my advice is go for a funny bit and you'll have a laugh
