Question:

Poem Recital for a Drama Audition?

I am required to recite a poem for an audition. I want the poem to be lighthearted, not too long and hopefully not to out dated and old fashioned. Surprisingly there is no time limit although we were told it couldn't be 'too long.' All answers are appreciated. Thank you

  1. excerpts from Carl Sandburg's LITTLE WORD, LITTLE WHITE BIRD--alot of wonderful word images describing the word "Love"--can choose as many descriptions as needed, leading up to, "...then there are those that say love is a little white bird, and the flight of it so fast you can't see it, and you know it's there only by the faint whirring of it's wings and the hush song it sings......." continuing through to the end of the poem ...."and my thanks for you hearing me, and my prayers for you.  My deep, silent prayers."  Very moving, and allows for several characterizations within a very short period of time.

    Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" is good, also full of word imagery, but being used alot in recent times.  "The Witch of Coos," by Frost provides an excellent opportunity to define characters (narrator, mother, and son) as well as acting out the story told by the mother...(length approx 8-10 min)

  2. My absolute favourite poem - 'The Road Not Taken'. Probably not what you are looking for if the criteria is excluding 'out-dated', but I think the language lends itself beautifully to it's purpose. If nothing else, it's worth a look.

    I'd also be heading to the Library. Original poems on the internet are rarely any good.

  3. Shel Silverstein (Hector the Collector or True Story, for example) or Ogden Nash are ALWAYS good choices for light auditions, although Nash's works tend to be very short.

  4. just look one up, it's not that hard.

  5. All my past life is mine no more ;

       The flying hours are gone,

    Like transitory dreams given o’er

    Whose images are kept in store

       By memory alone.

    Whatever is to come is not :

       How can it then be mine ?

    The present moment’s all my lot,

    And that, as fast as it is got,

       Phyllis, is wholly thine.

    Then talk not of inconstancy,

       False hearts, and broken vows ;

    If I, by miracle, can be

    This livelong minute true to thee,

       ’Tis all that heaven allows.
