I want to write a poem but someone told me its more complicated than just writing one. What are the different types of poems you can write?thanks

They probably meant that there's a difference between writing a poem and writing a good poem. If you write a poem for yourself, only the emotion is important and there's no need for it to be good. But if you want to show it to someone, post it somewhere, enter it in a contest or whatever, you've got to consider it like a tiny sculpture that you need to work hard to chisel. Consider things like rhyme scheme, metaphor, imagery, and wordplay. Just mess around and try lots of things, then ask people to read it and tell you if it worked. Take the advice people give you. If you're just starting to write poetry and aren't a natural genius, (few people are -- I'm certainly not) it might be a long time before you find your style.

Writing a poem doesn't have to be a production.  Just go with free verse for you first time.  Just write from the heart.  It's really quite simple.  :)
