Poetry Writing -tips / guidance please?

I need some tips on how to write a good poem. I don't have much time to write one but I really would appreciate ANY tips or guidance you can give me.

  1. Appeal to the senses, and express your thoughts and feelings through metaphors...

    For example, 'as pale as the moon itself'...

    You get the idea..

  2. If you're going for a rhyming poem, don't just worry about the rhymes.  Control the rhythms and beats.

    Avoid being unoriginal at all costs.  Take the time to examine every word and ask yourself if that word is needed or if it can be improved upon.  

    Invest in a thesaurus ( in case you happen to be in a writing mood and are away from your laptop.)

    Read poetry!  Learn from the masters--I personally love Pablo Neruda, Elizabeth Bishop, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Sylvia Plath.

    Breathe, dream, and eat words.  With poetry in your life, you won't really need anything else.  ; )

  3. Write about something you're really interested in and make sure it comes from the heart. Also, try to make it flow well. Try saying it out loud to see if it does.
