  1. Look up the poetry of Wilfred Owen, a British soldier during WW1 who was killed a week before armistice.  His work is chillingly beautiful.

There is no shortage of works showing the horrors of war.  The Napoleonic wars were revealed in all their brutality by Goya in his duet 2nd of May and 3rd of May.  Dali also responded to the Spanish Civil Wars, similar to Picasso, in his "Soft Construction with Baked Beans".  And, of course, that photograph "Execution in Hanoi" from Vietnam...which was shown in full action video in the recent movie (title escaping me for the moment).

If you want to include music, I'm rather fond of side 2 of King Crimson's "Lizard" album.

  2. Try www.armyhistory.org.  George Matthews Harding was a U.S Army combat artist of WW1. Horrible stuff wars. Brave are the ones that fight them. The Army Art Collection at the U.S. Army Center of Military History has 22 pieces of his work. Also World War 1 Document Archive at http//www.lib.edu/-rdh/wwi/ You should find what you need there.

  3. Check out the photography of Robert Capra. His images of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) are haunting. He shows the soldiers as well as civilians affected by the war. There is also a site that shows children's artwork from the Spanish Civil War, as well as photos of orphaned children. www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/exhibits/...

One famous painting of the atrocities of war is Guernica by Pablo Picasso. It is the scene of the town Guernica being bombed by n**i planes (helping Franco) during the Spanish Civil War, killing sleeping men, women and children.
