Poetry.com... score or scam??

So poetry.com has this annual competition where you send in a poem that you've written, and you can win money. I only found out after I sent in a poem, that the website is notorious for scamming people. They've sent me 2 letters. One was an announcement that my poem was going to be printed in a book of poetry, and that my poem had been copyrighted in my name. The other was a letter saying I had one an Editor's Choice Award, and that I was going to be put on CD, with a professional reader reading my poem.

Is all this true, or am I being scammed? Has anyone else submitted poetry for this thing and gotten a book? And has anyone gotten similar letters from these people? Thanks a million!!

  1. Scam. They said I was getting my poem published and that I got an Editor's choice award, but than you have to pay for the books and you cannot buy them in stores! You have to pay for everything, so just ignore them They're asses and don't send in anymore poetry, I haven't!

  2. i too have submitted a poem and also received emails concerning publishing, winning an award etc.  it is a money maker.  its nothing but a scam.

  3. All and All it is a scam, but it is legal. It gives everyone the joy of getting published, even if the poem is utter garbage, but long term short, it comes down to the bank they make off of it. I've had dozens of family members, poets, and so-on tell me about the scam, (you get published) but you pay 50+ for it. Its up there on the most pointless things.

You get the book, of pothetic poetry of course, at your own price. Its not worth it, but atleast you can say you got something published.

  4. Yeah, i got mine in a book... and I bought the book. its for real... but they make BANK from it lol

  5. It's a mild scam. The only people who buy the book are the other people who send in poetry. So it could be a load of mediocre writing. And the book is not cheap. It's called vanity publishing by any name, appealing to your desire to see your name in print. It's not a big scam in the sense that they don't drain your bank account. The concept has been around for hundred years and it does serve to make some people happy to see their name in print
