Poetry used for underlying purposes?

how do you think poets use poetry to bring across personal or social issues. Any thoughts would be helpful.

  1. Poets speak from within, so it is impossible for them to NOT bring across personal issues.  I think some poets make an effort to speak to social issues.  Maya Angelou would be an example.  I wonder, though, if really good poetry can be "made" to address an issue at all.  It seems to me that when poetry is at its best, it is not being forced to speak to anything more than what is in the heart/soul/mind of the poet.
