In recent times, the K-League has come under heavy criticism regarding match fixing and betting scandals. Korean Football Federation, duly aided by FIFA, is trying hard to eradicate this issue. Steelers were forced to take such a harsh step towards the midfielder
in order to set a good example for the rest of the players. FIFA also applauded the steps taken by the federation and ensured that all the necessary steps would be taken in order to punish the 34-year-old in best possible way.
The player himself confessed that he received a tip-off from an opposition player. Kim Jung-Kyum possibly placed a bet on a match played on April 6 between the Steelers and the Daejeon Citizens. The bet is believed to be of 9280 US dollars.
The midfielder joined the Steelers in 2008 from fellow Korean outfit, Jeonbuk Hyundai. Following his transfer to Steelers, the midfielder had made 35 league appearances. He also made seven international appearances for the Korean national side but could
not open his goal-account for the national side.
A statement released by the club officials reads: “Prosecutors haven't yet summoned any of our players and we've confirmed the rest of the team to be innocent. We've decided that we can no longer keep a player who's committed grave misconduct with such a
lack of professionalism and conscience."
The club’s higher authorities have confirmed that the midfielder would not get another chance to appear for the Steelers. They insisted on taking severe action against the Korean as it would be a good enough an example for the upcoming youngsters.
