Pointless projects in gradeschool?! (Posters, trifolds, shoeboxes....) Anyone agree?

Grades 4-8 were some of the most annoying grades of my entire learning career so far. Teachers were always assigning this project and that project where you have to cut and paste and glue, and get all of the necessary research too! I mean, I suppose it is good to get some experience making posters and collages, but for every single project? Come on, seriously, what does cutting and pasting and making silly artifacts and costumes (which took me hours and hours of my precious time by the way) have to do with the particular subject we were learning at school? To be perfectly honest, I learned way more about making pretty posters from my mother than about whatever the topic was. Really! It upset my parents because then they would have to get really involved too. Until I was in 6th grade my mom made the posters for me because how can you expect a 4th grader to make an attractive poster? Does anyone agree with me here? Please share your experiences!

  2. You must not be a kinesthetic learner.  That is okay, but some students in your school are just that.  In other words they learn by doing hands-on activities.  Also other students like the opportunity to use their creativity and their artistic abilities.  Teachers are encouraged to provide assignments that allow for all types of learning styles.  The poster, project type may not appeal to you, but there are other students to think about.  In addition, these assignments give you a chance to stretch and develop areas that are not your strong suit.  Unless you have decided upon your career already, who knows when you might be called upon to create some sort of visual in connection with your job in years to come.  Ease up and go with the flow.  When assigned a project such as you describe, do your best and don't gripe about it.

  3. Honestly, I agree with you. In grade 8 I had to make a replica of a great river in either the States or Canada. How am I supposed to make a scale replica out of a great river?? It took me 4 days to complete and I only got a C+ for my effort...

  4. Well, for certain subject I do agree, sometime projects are pointless.  Sometimes schools just need something to display to show that the kids are working for when the big guys from Dept of Education stop by.   However, projects whether you know it or not, do and can help you learn, not in just a subject, but holistically.

You learn what is your own particular style as far and as creativity, you learn how to do research-  how to solve your own problems, find solutions which is what life in general is all about.   Not everything in life can be found in a book.  Maybe you are not a hands on learner, and thats okay too.   I personally hate it when teachers grade on "creativity"  as if all students have the same artistic style, that is wrong and I agree with you 100%.
