Points to remember while serving in volleyball
There are several skills involved in the game of volleyball which are both basic and specialized. Players tend to master the basic skills while focus on any one of the specialized skills in order to define their role in a volleyball team. There are many
who categorize serving in the specialized skill set along with spiking and setting etcetera whereas some consider it to be part of the basic volleyball skills that include passing and blocking. However, teams that have developed the skill of serving in each
one of its players find it a lot easier to score points and consequently have a higher probability of a win.
The following quote by Karch Kiraly explains the importance of mastering the art of serving, “No volleyball play can begin without a serve, and the serve is the only technique that is totally under your control. In other endeavors, you cannot succeed without
believing in yourself, and that belief is completely under your control.”
There have been many incidents in which a team has been able to extend a lead or push ahead from a big deficit on the back of good serves that the players of the opposing team find difficult to break. A server can aim his or her serve at a weak area of the
opposing team and alter the speed as well as the direction of the serve according to his or her liking. In this way, a serve can act as a key tool in scoring points and gaining dominance in matches.
However, in order to achieve a high level of serving, the players in a volleyball team must practice the serving techniques vigorously in training sessions. Rather than undergoing physical practice for serving, a good server also needs to concentrate on
other things while performing a serve. It is important that a server has an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the players on the opposing team, especially in terms of passing ability. In this way, the weakest passer can be identified and the serve can
be aimed at that player.
Another important consideration to make while serving is to make the serve in such a way that the players on the opposing team perform actions that they are least willing to perform. For example, a hitter can be made to pass the ball as he or she tries to
break the serve. In this way, the opposing players would be more focused on passing the ball rather than working towards an attack.
The servers should also be able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses in serving so that they know how to work with their abilities. If a server knows the limits of his or her performance, then he or she will not execute a serve over which control
is lacking. In this way, a server will be more in charge of the serve and will be able to formulate an effective strategy.
It is important that these points are made use of in practice sessions as well so that they become second nature to the servers. When servers execute a serve keeping these things in mind, they will be more effective in performing a good serve. Not only that,
the frequency of a volleyball team in scoring points will also see significant improvement.
