I am moving soon and the house has a great large yard. I have one problem though. The area designated for a garden is full of poison ivy. My question is, if I were to use a chemical ivy killer (any suggestions) and tilled the area could I plant a garden next year or would I need to do something different. Would it harm the veggies I would want to grow???? Any other helpful suggestion of removing poison ivy would also be appreciated! Thanks

  1. roundup several times. no harm to veggies

  2. The week killer will have gone by next year. It would be safe to plant then. You could try pulling it up, just be sure to wear a long sleeved shirt and gloves. Wash good afterwards. By all means DO NOT BURN POISON IVY. When I was a kid my Dad burned some off our land and we got in the smoke.  We were covered with it and my sister ingested it and had to get shots. Her whole face swelled up and we all had bad rashes. It was AWFUL! Hope you have better luck.  :)

  3. home depot has plenty of herbicides marked for poison ivy.

Your plan sounds great.  Obviously, you should expect some to grow back, because you have it in the area.  You can continue to fight it as it comes, and try to knock it back further and further using your herbicide.

  4. You can find a herbicide that will specifically target Poison ivy.  Just read the instructions and the list of weeds it will kill.

It should be ok to plant a garden there next year.

To be sure call your county's Home Extension office.  They will know the answers to your questions concerning this.

  5. Round-up is about the only thing that can kill poison ivy. Once it is dead, pull the vines out and burn them, or take them to a landfill. Be sure to wear gloves, long sleeves and long pants when handling the vines, some people can still break out handling even dead vines. If you choose to burn them, stay far from the smoke. You can re-plant two weeks after using round-up with no problems.
