  1. Poison Ivy It is not common of our forests.

  2. I never saw any in the rain forest but do watch for scorpions & snakes. A little common sense will go a long way there.

  3. There is no poison ivy in Costa Rica but there a plants in the same family that could provoke a similar reaction-- if you are particularly sensitive to poison ivy.   Ironically, you have relatively little to worry about from wild plants, the most common poison ivy relatives are domesticated fruits-- the cashew and the mango.

  4. I spent a month there last summer and yes pretty much all of costa rica is a tropical rain forest. Make sure you are going with a guide because it's very easy to get lost. I never had any problems but I also wore bug spray that had a lot of deet and had stuff to treat a bug bite just in case. I have never seen poison ivy there or heard of it being an issue. In the south east part of Costa Rica (the Caribbean coast) is where you will hear a lot about malaria and mosquitoes. Most costa ricans will tell you that malaria is not a problem but American doctors sometimes do. I took once a week malaria pills just in case (get them from a doctor) but no one who didn't take them had any problems. Have fun in Costa Rica!
