  1. EV training is making a pokemon more powerful in a certain stat. EV stands for Effort Values. They are named this because of the effort you put in to this special training.

It works like this: when you beat another pokemon, your pokemon gets 1-3 points. These are called Effort Points, or EP's. Each pokemon gives a different type(s) of points (usually the stat they are best in). For example, an Alakazam would give three points in Sp.Attack, whereas a Machamp would give three in Attack.

When you get four EV's in one stat, that is one extra stat point in that stat. Each pokemon gets a maximum of 510 EV's. But since this number is not divisible by 4, there are two EV's that will be unused when you complete your training.

If you're confused, here's an example. A level 10 Pikachu battles 4 Ralts and gains a level. Since each of these Ralts gave one Sp.Attack stat, the Pikachu gained one extra Sp.Attack stat point.

    TIPS

Try to raise the EV's of the pokemon's best stats. If you're playing competitively, then each of your pokemon will have a role and you should make the stats you're going to use the highest. There is a rare condition your pokemon might get when battling another wild pokemon. This is called Pokerus. Do not search for it, as it is extremely hard to get. The purpose of this condition is to double the amount of EV's a pokemon gets when defeating another. So if that Pikachu I talked about earlier battled four Ralts and had Pokerus, it would get 8 EV's and 2 stat points. Another EV booster is the Macho Brace. This item, like Pokerus, doubles the amount of EV's your pokemon gets, but also lowers speed during the battle. In Diamond and Pearl, there are 6 items (one for each stat) that can be obtained at the Battle Tower which boost the amount of EV's by four. These are called Power items. The Power Anklet boosts speed, the Band boosts Sp.Defense, the Belt boosts Defense, the Bracer boosts Attack, the Lens boosts Sp.Attack, and the Weight boosts HP. The way you spread you EV's between the stats is called an EV spread. Most people use 252, 252, and 4 since it is easy to divide by 4. But if you want use your own.
