  2. Well, couple things. First of all, get rid of the Roselia or Grotle, you only need one, I would recommend just getting rid of Roselia and not bothering with it. If you want a Ghost type, go with Gengar, I'll trade you a Haunter if you want (email me). Gyrados is good, just make sure you teach it Ice Fang, and Surf or Aqua Tail, but Lumineon would be much better. To get a Lumineon, just go to the beach right below Sandgem and fish with the Good Rod to get a Finneon, then raise it to level 31. Ponyta really isn't a very good Fire type, but it's really the only thing available at that point in the game. The best Fire type you can get before the E4 is Infernape, I just got a Turtwig egg and put it up for trade on the GTS asking for a Chimchar, then raised that to the same level as my Torterra and Empoleon (same deal to get that). Staraptor is good to have, but only if it has a nature that boosts the Attack (Lonely, Brave, Adamant, Naughty) teach that Aerial Ace, Close Combat, and possibly Fly, then something like Agility. But if you want something that is REALLY going to own, get yerself a Zubat and evolve it into a Golbat, then give it a massage once a day from the lady in Veilstone (when you get there), and do your best to avoid it getting KO'd in battle, then when it likes you enough you get a Crobat. Grotle is a good choice, Turtwig was my starter, too. Teach that Earthquake, Razor Leaf, Crunch, and Leaf Storm, it will make you able to beat even your friend's Infernape. I recommend ditching Gyrados and Ponyta and replacing them with Lumineon and Infernape, or if you want to go with a theme like I did, just get an Empoleon as well. Crobat's Attack isn't as good as Staraptor, but it's Speed is infinitely better AND it learns some great moves.

    Lumineon/Empoleon

    Infernape

    Staraptor/Crobat

    Torterra

    Gengar

A Dragon type is always useful because of their amazing stats, the only one available before the Elite four is Garchomp, to get one of those just go to the Cycling Road (south end) then go to the east side of the route near the very southernmost point, go a little north, then you find some trees that you have to cut down, cut them down and go north through the grass until you find a cave entrance on the east side of the road. Go in and go down the flight of stairs and there are Gible down there (uncommon) level it up to lvl. 24 for Gabite, then lvl. 48 for Garchomp.

Psychic types are another really useful thing to have, Alakazam is good (I can trade a Kadabra if you want, don't need anything for it). Bronzong is another good choice (to get Bronzor, go to Wayward Cave, same as for Garchomp). Mr. Mime is a decent choice, it's really underrated in the Pokemon world, but it is a really good choice.
