  1. You always take the best five cards.

    So if the board is:

    A 9 8 4 of hearts and 2 of clubs.

And you have 6h3c and your dad has js3h, then the hands in this example would be:

    You: A 9 8 6 4 h - Flush

    Dad: A 9 8 4 3 h - Flush

As you can see, you have the better cards for the flush, and are therefore the winner.

  2. Buddy you lost to your dad, why?  Because If you were dealt 1st, the burnt card is unsuited was yours, leaving your dad with the 2-3 cards on hearts on the flush, 1 ace was from the 2 heart in your hand.

  3. Whoever has the highest heart in their hand wins the pot. the Ace is shared by both of you, so the next high card wins. Since one you your hearts is higher, than that hand wins.

In Texas Holdem you make the best possible 5 card hand using all the cards, the flop can be used by both players.
