Poland, Germany stay undefeated on third day of 2012 CEV Women’s Junior Volleyball Championship
Poland and Germany remained remarkably consistent on the third day of the European Women’s Junior Volleyball Championship, which is underway from April 11-15.
The Pool A teams, Poland and Germany, maintained their good run in the competition and clinched success on day 3.
Poland defeated potentially weak rival Lithuania in straight sets on Friday. The Poles proved to be too tough for the underdog team and smashed 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-20) victory in only 59 minutes. On the other hand, German ladies went against French squad
and grabbed success with three sets to one. The set scores were 25-13, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21.
At the end of day-3, Poland and Germany both improved to 3-0 record. The two teams are quite optimistic to qualify for the next round of the tournament from Pool A.
Polish team started out well and dominated the scene throughout the match. They faced little resistance from Lithuania and easily managed to claim the opening set. The second set progressed in the similar fashion, where Poland led the score and Lithuania
trailed behind. Poland extended its lead to 2-0 by winning second set with good margin.
Comparatively saying, Lithuania played better in third set and shortened the gap to five points. However, Poland denied all their efforts and closed the game in third set.
Poland’s Julia TWARDOWSKA was the top scorer of the match with 11 points. She was the only player in the match, who got into double-figures.
Elsewhere, the German and French teams came into stride and contested their volleyball skills. Germany captured the opening set of the match with a lead of 12 points. Nonetheless, the French team gave a tough time to Germany in the second set. They threw
everything in attack and snatched second-set win from Germany, which tied the game score at 1-1. The French ladies showed good fighting spirit in second set but could not carry the momentum into third set.
The French team fell victim to deadly aces and kills of German hitters and dropped third set. Germany continued with success in fourth set as well and earned the winning with the loss of only one set.
The winning coach of Germany Han Abbing praised the wonderful effort of his players.
He said, “We knew that the match with France would have been tough; after spending three weeks together while preparing for this European campaign we knew their potential and quality.”
“This is a very tough group and I am evidently upset after this game. Tonight we played well in attack and defense but unfortunately we missed one fundamental as our block was almost not existent. However, I am still proud of my players,” said France’s mentor
Jacques Beraud.
