Poland and France finish day-2 matches in straight sets – Volleyball news
Women’s National Junior Teams of Poland and France grabbed success on the day-2 of 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball Championship.
Polish ladies proved to be a detractor for home team of Belarus, while France defeated Latvia. Both matches were played at SK Olimpiets in Mogilev, Belarus on Thursday, April 12.
Poland earned the winning status by sending 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-15) on board, whereas France seized victory with 25-12, 25-18, and 25-20 in three respective sets. Poland moved to 2-0 after winning two matches of the second round of the tournament.
On the other hand, French team made a great comeback in the game after losing its first match to Poland on Wednesday. France currently stands with an overall record of 1-1.
The home crowd of Belarus had high hopes about victory in the second match but Poland stole the show with better performance. Belarus relied on top gun Volha Lazitskaya, who put up a valiant effort but failed to lead her team to success. She contributed
14 points, which was not enough to avoid defeat. The home squad opened the match on a strong footing and picked up lead at 16:14 in first set but Polish hitters changed the scenario afterwards. They hit with great consistency and devastated the hosts with
flurry of points.
Belarus dropped the opening set with a margin of six points and could not defend its position in the next two sets either. Belarusian mentor Mikhail Kovalenko used different player combinations and tried better substitutions but the team failed to overcome
the Poles. Eventually, Belarus dropped the decision in straight set.
Poland’s Aleksandra WOJCIK was named the top scorer of the match as she contributed match-high 16 points. Her teammate Iga CHOJNACKA did equally well and also registered 16 points.
In the third match of the day-2, France exhibited a stellar performance against Latvia. Latvian team had the support of experienced head coach Inguna Minusa but still could not perform up to the mark. French ladies pushed them hard to claim the first win
of the competition.
Latvia was restricted to a low of 12 in the opening stanza, which was a clear sign that French team was prepared for the kill. The Latvian squad improved in the following set and scored 18 points but could not catch up with French counterparts.
Latvia had a fair chance to prolong the game in third frame but after a time-out the French players got back the necessary composure and clawed their way to straight set victory.
No. 9 Elisabeth FEDELE of France served as the main weapon for her team. She supported the team with 15 points, which included nine winning spikes, 2 blocks, and four aces.
Both teams will return to action on day-3 of the competition with different competitors.
