One of the matches on the first day of the fourth round of the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup today, December 2, saw the Polish national men’s volleyball team competing against the Italians. The competition between the two teams took place in the capital of Japan,
Tokyo, where the tournament is currently being staged. The Polish squad overcame the Italians by 3-2 at Yoyogi National Gym.
The match between the two sides went on for five long and thrilling sets at the end of which the Polish were able to seal the deal on the Italians at the following final set scores: 17-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 15-12.
The first set of the match saw the Polish struggle with their game while the Italians played strong all through. The Italians were able to take the lead early on and stick with the advantage till the end of the set which saw the Polish end up with a loss.
The momentum generated from winning the first set got the Italians to play well in the second set too. However, the Polish were able to step up their performance and provide their opponents with a significant challenge but the effort was not enough to earn
a win.
The loss of the first two sets of the game made the Polish to rally together as a consequence of which they were able to come out strong in the third set and put on an impressive display of volleyball skills in order to save themselves a clean sweep. Once
the Polish had the confidence of win, they were able to play well in the fourth set too and equalise the match with a win. The fifth set of the match was as competitive as expected but the Polish proved to be the better side in the end.
The coach of the winning team, Andrea Anastasi, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match reached its close: “Today is a special day for us, not just because of the victory. We didn't lose our focus.
We continued to push and finally we were able to win.”
