Poland knocks Brazil out of World League finals by a 3-2 win – Volleyball news
The first match of the second day of the FIVB World League Finals was held between Brazil and Poland on Thursday, July 5, 2012. The host city of the championship was Sofia, Bulgaria while the match was being played at the Arena Armeec. A crowd of 3000 spectators saw the match in which Poland was able to knock Brazil out of the running by securing a win at 3-2.
Poland was able to hand out the defeat to the top ranked team in the world in two hours and 22 minutes at the following final set scores: 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17 and 15-10.
The coach of the Polish squad, Andrea Anastasi, expressed his satisfaction with the win in the following words, “It is a very important victory for us as we moved forward to the semi-finals with having played just one match. Nevertheless, we have to improve a lot of things in our system of playing and work with the rhythm, as well.”
On the other hand, the Brazilian coach, Bernardo Rezende, had the following comments to make at the loss of his team, “The Polish team played a very good match. What I liked today in our attitude towards the match was that we played with heart...We are sorry that we will not play during the weekend here.”
The best scorer of the match was Bartosz Kurek of Poland as he was able to tally 25 points for his team. Kurek was helped by his team mate Zbigniew Bartman who made his presence felt by scoring 21 points for his side. On the Brazilian squad, the highest number of points was tallied by Leandro Vissotto Neves who put up a score of 16.
The first technical time out of the opening set came with a Polish lead but Brazil was able to push ahead with the advantage later on. The match got to a tie at 22-22 but it was Brazil that was able to secure the opening set of the game at 25-23.
Poland played harder in the second set of the game and kept the challenge up all through. The frame swung back and forth for the most part but reached a tie at 22-22. However, this time it was Poland that was able to seal the deal at 25-23.
The third set started off with a Brazilian lead at 5-1 and they were able to take it further till the second technical time out at 16-8. Poland was able to close in the gap but they fell to making errors later on that gave away the win to Brazil at 25-23.
Poland came out strong in the fourth set and was able to assert themselves all the way till the end at 25-17. The fifth set was also dotted with superior attacking skills of the Polish side that resulted in a comfortable win for Poland at 15-10.
