Poland tops Pool F of World League – Volleyball news
A Pool F match of the FIVB World League took place on the last day of the final round of the tournament on Friday, July 6, 2012. The two teams that contested against each other in the Bulgarian city of Sofia were Poland and Cuba. The venue of the competition
was the Arena Armeec which was filled with a crowd of 3500 spectators. By the time that the match ended, Poland had secured the top spot in the pool by making a clean sweep over Cuba.
Poland was able to bag three sets back to back in one hour and 27 minutes at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-20 and 25-23.
The coach of the Polish squad, Andrea Anastasi, expressed his delight at the victory of his team by making the following comments, “We are happy to finish first in the pool. We will now wait to see what kind of match we will have to prepare for next as it
will be a long night for the coaches preparing the next game.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Cuban team, Orlando Samuels Blackwood, shared his views at the press conference after the match in the following words, “This kind of matches are hard to be played especially for the young players. Today our attack and
serving did not work in the right way and not all of my instructions were followed. The Polish team deserved the victory.”
The top scorer of the match was the Polish player Zbigniew Bartman as he tallied a total of 17 points. Bartman was helped by his teammate Piotr Nowakowski who scored 11 points to keep the pressure up on his rivals. On the other hand, the highest score that
was made from the Cuban side was by Yordan Bisset Astengo who added 16 points for his side.
The Polish were able to take the lead at the start of the first set which they extended further. The Cubans tried to take charge of the situation by closing in the gap but Poland kept ahead and steadily drew towards a win at 25-23.
The second set saw quite a few ties but Poland eventually pulled ahead with the lead. Cuba kept the challenge up by putting up a good defence but their attack was not working well which led to slow scoring for Cuba. On the other hand, Poland managed to find
gaps in the Cuban court and gradually made their way towards another win at 25-20.
The Cubans rallied together and stepped up their game in the third set which enabled them to gain some sway based on their strong serving but the Polish kept things close through their relentless attack. Poland was able to take the lead in the end and seal
the deal at 25-23.
