  1. Scientists estimate there are 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears world-wide, including about 2,000 that frequent the Beaufort Sea off Alaska. The latest population study by federal officials, in 1997, suggested the Alaskan bear population wasn't endangered. An update is expected by the end of next year.

    In the 1950s the polar bear population up north was estimated at 5,000. Today it's 20- to 25,000, a number that has either held steady over the last 20 years or has risen slightly. In Canada, the manager of wildlife resources for the Nunavut territory of Canada has found that the population there has increased by 25 percent."

    I could try to tell you all the things I know about Polar bears, but inevitably I would miss something out, or think I'd told you already, or just think it too obvious to tell you.

    For example, polar bears are white. I would probably have forgotten to tell you that.

  6. I was told polar bears' livers are poisonous to humans.  Don't eat their livers.
