first of all, if you got a beginner horse, make sure he knows the pattern. then work on the details.  remember that the straightest lines lead to faster times. get as close to the pole as possible without knocking it over. Turn the horse when your shoulder is parallel to the pole and don't make wide arc turns.

It really does not mater if you make him trot or canter as long as he does the course right it does not mater but when you make the last turn on the poles let  lose of your rain's and let the horse go just keep kicking the horse.
