I did my first pole dancing lesson a week ago, and when i attempted the outer and inner leg spins, i was stopped as it pulled my skin! it really hurt, and gave me red marks. why is this, as my friend did not have the same problem? it only pulled on the back of my leg. xx

  1. oh yes they have nicknames but it happens (esp to first times) so don't worry too much.

Basically first timers have more sensitive skin, were as 'the pros's'  have toughened up the skin in that area a bit. Just like in gymnastics you may want to powder yourself so as you don't stick to the pole. Again think of gymnast and the uneven bars....if your skin is sticky or whatever it will stick and pull on pole. I think this may also be a reason why dancers use alot of oil/lotions so as their skin is slippery on the pole.Ever notice the dancers always wipe the pole down after each girl or even after themselves?

You may have also had your knee (back of leg) wrapped too tightly around pole

  2. it's friction, baby! it's going to happen. you could try wearig leggings or hose or try adding baby powder to your legs. you just need to put a buffer between you and the pole.

  3. You are gripping the pole too tightly. Grip with your upper hand while pushing against the pole (out) with your lower hand. Liquid chalk used for sports like golf and tennis will give you an amazing grip. You can purchase one brand online called "mighty grip". With more practice, you will become more confident and comfortable and develop the proper form to avoid bruises and pole burn. Good luck!
