Pole duo of Fyrstenberg/Matkowski seals final spot for 2011 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals – Tennis News
Pole duo, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, triumphed over Arnaud Clement and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and confirmed their spot in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
They were the last pair to qualify for this tournament that will feature top eight best team performers of the year.
In doubles category, the tournament will feature the teams of Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan, Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic, Daniel Nestor and Max Mirnyi, Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, Jurgen
Melzer and Philipp Petzschner, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and the latest qualifiers, the Pole duo.
The other two teams that were in the hitch for the last spot for season-end finale were the Brazilian duo, Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares, and Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer but they lost their respective matches and lost their
opportunity to qualify for the tournament.
Partnership between Fyrstenberg and Matkowski has been pretty successful this year and are ranked 10th and 9th respectively on ATP doubles world rankings. Pole duo kicked-off year proceedings in a disappointing
fashion as they lost their first match in Sydney but picked up pace in Australian Open and reached till the quarter-finals of that tournament before being slammed by the team of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor.
They reached quarter-final at Rotterdam as well but couldn’t make it through to the quarter of any of ATP 1000 Masters Tours except Monte Carlo where they made it to the semis but lost to reigning World No.1 Bryan brothers. They
have been reaching advanced round of major tournaments but couldn’t clinch any grand title, except Sopot, Poland tournament in which they started as top seed, due to major upsets or Bryan brothers. They lost to Bryans’ in Madrid and then again in Cincinnati
in the quarter-finals of both tournaments.
US Open proved to be a very successful run for them as they marched into the finals in grand style and were looking threatening to clinch the title but were ruled out of the title race by their opponents Jurgen Melzer and Philipp
Petzschner in straight sets.
Shanghai tour proved to be very beneficial as well and they clinched few more vital points by reaching the semi-final and so did Vienna tour. Valencia was very disappointing as they lost in round of 16 but they are performing well
in ongoing tournament and looks set to clinch their second title as Bryan brothers are also knocked-out by the French wild card tandem of Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut.
