Police Academy Question. Switching States?

If you are a sworn officer in the State of New Jersey, and considering a relocation to either Florida, or California would you have to go through the Academy in either of those states, or would them accept a New Jersey PTC.

  1. I am an Illinois LEO that considered switching to FL after retirement up here.

    There is a 6 week academy for current LEO's to obtain your Florida certification.

    Florida salaries are very low - I'm sure your doing quite well in NJ - you'll be surprised.


  2. You are a sworn officers in NJ that's it. You will have to do the PT over and possible take the civil service exam again. Once you get that over with you will be on probation like a rookie. And double check with the retirement.

  3. It depends on if CA will acknowledge your states peace officer certification standards. It will also depend on what department you want to work for. For instance, LAPD would put you through a 2 week modified academy, and CHP on the other hand would require you to attend the full academy.
