Police Action after School Shootings?

What is the process of action taken by the police after a school shooting? I have written a short segment and need to follow it up with some factual information: A young man has a gun and demands that one member of the student body come to him and let everyone else go. This boy has a hostage, a young woman. Near the end, there is a gun battle in which a SWAT member is gunned down and the crim is killed on scene. The young man takes the hostage and takes her outside, she has also been critically wounded. What would the police do as a follow up? As much detail as possible would be appreciated, thank you!

The police would follow up only to the point of the investigation of the shooting.

The school, however, would have have a debriefing and make counselors available to all students who requested them.
