Question:

Police Radar/Detector?

Hi guys my cousin has a "police radar" i suppose we can call it.

But, it's very small about the size of the razor cell phone cut in half. He sticks it to his car window. And it has 4 lights. These lights beep when there's a ambulance, cop car, or police cars around you. So he knows when to slow down.

Does anyone know of any Detectors/Radars to do this ,in other words scan for any cop cars. AndI'mm not looking for a radar to detect the laser gun, when your speeding in the highway. My focus is on something that will scan for any police cars around and warn you about it.

-I would like something small, cheap and efficient :)

  1. sometimes cops would drive around with their dashmounted radar on and not even know it cuz sometimes my radar detector would go crazy for a couple secs when it passes me or it gets out of range... and when you get a radar detector, DONT GET A CHEAP ONE!! you get what you pay for....cuz i have been pulled over for speeding once and my radar detector didn't do anything

  2. If it detects any emergency vehicle then it must scan the emergency radio frequencies for signal strength indicating that one is near-by.  Clever.

  3. No, they don't make anything like that.  Radar detectors-Yes

By the way radar detectors and radar guns are made by the same companies, go figure.

  4. They sell them at any electronics store.

They're illegal in some states though.

  5. my dad had a few of those in his truck, hes a truck driver so he had to drive fast all the time, even he had he would still get pulled over and u know what funny! the cops would take the radar detector away from him but my dad would put another cuz he always had an extra one lol but he got them all on ebay.com like $20 very cheap

  6. First, there is no such thing as a 'police radar' that detects the police. Radar detectors can detect the radio frequencies emitted by most police radar guns IF AND ONLY IF the radar gun is turned on. A police officer without a radar gun, or who has his/her radar gun turned off, is no more detectable than you or I driving in our vehicle. Some radar detectors and other devices will detect and alert to emergency vehicle warnings, signals sent out to warn of nearby accidents, emergency vehicles and/or road construction.

Contrary to a previous post, radar detectors are completely LEGAL in nearly every state (see source). Radar detector prices range from below $50 (complete junk and waste of money) to over $500 (the best available). If you can't afford at least $150, you are looking at a cheap radar detector. Don't waste your money.

As an alternative to buying a cheap radar detector, I would seriously consider just never driving fast. The cheaper the radar detector, the fewer features it has, the fewer radar bands it detects, the less likely it is to detect those bands, the more often you will receive false alerts, and the more visible it is to police radar detector detectors (RDD). If you use a cheap radar detector, you are likely to 1. not receive an alarm when you should, 2. receive false alarms when you shouldn't, and 3. receive a ticket and have the device confiscated.

Additionally, police are more frequently using laser to measure speed. Most (non-cheap) radar detectors will alert to laser, but you only have .2 seconds (2 tenths of a second) after your radar detector alerts to radar and when your speed has been measured. That's not enough time for you to look at your speedometer, let alone adjust your speed if necessary. If your radar detector alerts to laser and you are speeding, you might as well pull over and wait for the ticket. If you are concerned about police laser, your only option is a laser jammer (like radar detectors, they are also legal in most states). Like radar detectors, laser jammers are also LEGAL in most states.

Drivers who are serious about radar and laser protection generally expect to spend at least $400 on a worthwhile system. If you can't afford at least $150 for protection against a speeding ticket + fine + court costs + insurance increase, I suggest that you save your money for your next ticket, and pay more attention to your speedometer.

  7. First off, your description is completely wrong.  A radar detector does just that it DETECTS RADAR WAVES.  It in no way detects ambulances or squads without active radar running.  Most of the squads in my agency don't even use radar, so the chance of it working for you is slim.  However, it is still illegal to use a radar detector in many states.  Use it in mine and that's another citation added to the initial one.

There is absolutely nothing that lets you know when a squad car is around besides your own eyes and ears.  Anyone that tells you different is, well, either a moron or lying to you.

    Use at your own risk.
