Question:

Police (UK) Application - Parent's Speeding An Issue?

It says to disclose if your parents are involved in criminal activity or anything which resulted in a clash with the law. Would my dad caught speeding and going to court to pay a fine impact on my family's background checks which are carried out? His CRB for a security guard came back fine so I presume he has no criminal record????

Thank you

  1. His speeding offences will not have any detrimental impact on your application at all.

  2. When I applied to join the Police I was asked on the application to provide details of any criminal convictions for myself or family members which included speeding fines.  I had a speeding fine a few years previously and the points were still on my licence when I joined.  This wasn't a problem.

Your Dad having a speeding fine shouldn't (and I very much doubt that it will) cause you a problem.

I have colleagues who have family members who have been in prison for much more serious offences.  This didn't affect their application either.

You have no control over what members of your family do so their past is not a barrier to your application.  The problems arise when you don't disclose something that you should have disclosed.  as long as you are honest and open about your own and your family's past then you should be fine.

Unless you yourself have been convicted of a serious or dishonesty (theft related) offence then you shouldn't have a problem.

    Good luck with the application.

  3. There is nothing to worry about here.

Speeding is not a recordable criminal conviction unless your father served some sort of custiodal conviction or community service which would be only in extreme circumstances for excessive speed.

If all your talking about your father got was points and a fine it would not be a issue.

My father has a conviction for a sexual assualt and served five years in prison and i work for the police and i am a special constable.  Just disclose anything you think is relevant.

I would not be concerned about your fathers background.

  4. Speeding is not (yet) a criminal offence, and there is presumably no clash with the law involved, as your dad will have co-operated throughout.

    No need to mention.

  5. Speeding is hardly criminal activity. It is a motoring offence. Most requests for disclosure of criminal convictions exclude minor offences such as speeding. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
