Ok i was watching a show today. Something about wild police chases and i have a question about that. Say two towns border each other. An officer needs to do a rountine traffic stop and the person has the bright idea to flee. So the officer goes after him. The person gets real close to the next town. Can the officer chase the person into the next town or does she/he have to call ahead to the officers in the next town to continue the chase? thanks!

  1. There are a few conditions that have to be met, but in that situation, yes the officer can decide to pursue if he or she feels the need to.

  2. Absolutely they can pursue.  Officers that work for towns or cities are still officers that have the power to enforce the laws of their state.

  3. Yes they can chase them into the next town or even state for that matter. If a chase is going on the other town will already know about it.

  4. You call ahead to inform the next town of the pursuit. However the originating officer does not necessarily stop chasing. Sometimes (most of the time) you get two or more cops for the price of one. This also depends on department policy and what the chase is for. For a serious crime you may get the whole world chasing you.

  5. they call ahead then hang back to let the guys w/ the jurisdiction get the glory. & if U make 'em chase ya - don' B surprised when they beat your butt !

  6. The Officer will usually have Dispatch advise the next jurisdiction that the pursuit is coming towards their municipality and request assistance. The Officer can still  stop and apprehend the driver even though the pursuit ended in the other jurisdiction.  In WI theoretically I can pursue a vehicle anywhere within the state. But like Trooper, I am on the border of another state and while we do have a Mutual Aid agreement, our Policy is that unless it is for a related felony, all pursuits terminate at the state line.

  7. You can purse anywhere in your home state. You can only pursue into another state if you have a Mutual Aid agreement, and it does not violate policy.

I live on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan, and we have this come up occasionally. We do have Mutual Aid agreements, but our policy is we do not chase on just the traffic charge, we must have probably cause a felony was committed.

  8. It's called..."Hot Pursuit"...in MO anyway.  If that same guy stops at his house and runs on foot into his house........ PO can continue to chase him into his house.

  9. You go right on after them. You ask dispatch to radio ahead and ask for assistance from the next jurisdictions PD, We can not cross International boarders however.
