  1. at my school there is a police academy you can take and it for 1-4 years. Maybe your high school offers a police academy you should check and if not then i dont know.

At my school they also offer fire academy that i am and is exclusive to only 11 students and its for 2-3 years and start out in the 10th grade

  2. Depends.

Check to see what the requirements are for police in your community or in the jurisdiction you'd like to work.  Most now require at least 2 yrs of college before applying.  With a BS or graduate degree you make more money. (There is sometimes grant money available to help with these advances courses).

Many also require you graduate from a police training course or academy as a condition of hire - but this is while you are a new hire.

Don't be shy. Give local law enforcement and ask.

If you think you'd be interested in becoming a detective, take some advances science courses that will help you in forensics studies in college.

If you have interest in federal agencies such as FBI or secret service, their requirements are radically different. They are looking for thinkers, accountants and the like. Go to their web sites and review.

The HS I taught in offered Criminal Justice as an elective. Very popular.

As a former deputy sheriff with a BS in CRJ, I worked with a number of (older) officers who had no post-secondary education. At the very least, you need to be in good physical shape, be a good (and patient) communicator, both oral and written, have a basic understanding of psychology, good computer skills, and good manners, please!

Cops with manners and cilvility gain far more respect in the community than those who do not. Its also helpful to take courses in government, cultural diversity, and various religions. And of course, to be fluent in a 2nd language common in your community would give you a big leg up.

Keep it clean. Many law enforcement agencies do polygraphs and extensive backgrouhd checks, and may disqualify you if you've ever used illegal drugs.

It can be a very good life. Just remember, a cop is a cop 24/7. Its not a job - its a way of life. Good luck to you.
