  1. I bought a "rehomed" former police horse.

The reason he washed out was he became cinchy.  I used him as lesson horse then subsequently sold him when I moved out of the area.  I had the buyer lease him for 6 months first while she learned to handle him and work on his quirky habit of pulling back when cinched.

He's in his late 20's now and she loves him still.

So check out the reasons besides unsoundnesses before you rehome one.

Check with your local Metropolitian PD's or even those not so local ones (Dallas/Ft Worth areas).

BTW, my former California Police horse has moved to the Dallas/Ft Worth area.

    Best of luck.

  2. you can probably call your local police station and ask them if you can and how and then go from there

  3. If you go on to the mounted metropoliton (i think thats how you spell it!) police force you can add you name to the waiting list.  There is a long list though because loads of people want a bombproof hacking horse.  Then of course you will have to have your home vetted and you will have to be matched for subitability.

    Good luck

  4. When the Met & City of London retire their horses, they normaly send them to a horse retirement home like " Home of rest " at Speen. It may be possible to re home one before it ends up their. I would be inclined to contact them direct. Just bear it in mind that these horses may be quite elderly. They do mostly street work at the walk pace so they may not be particually suitable as a general riding hack.

  5. The ILPH takes retired police horses on.  May be worth looking on their site.

You need to be aware though that some of these horse have been retired for a reason and may not be able to be ridden and are just looking for a home as a companion.

You will have to be prepared for a wait for one to become available.  It may be worth considering another horse from there.

The process is that you see a horse on the website, and apply for him.  From there, you get invited into the centre to see and ride the horse.  If you get on with him, you may then be asked to go back into the centre to see the horse again and try the horse again.  You will be assessed and it's your opportunity to ask any questions about the horse etc.

From there, the centre will then ask one of their field officers to go out and inspect your stables or the yard that you propose to keep their horse on.

If from there, you are successful, you arrange to collect your horse, there you are required to pay for a "lenders fee" which is stated on their website and the price varies from horse to horse, from there after all the paperwork is done the horse is then loaded and off you go!

Afterwards, the field officer will drop in periodically to check the horse.  If you require any advice, both the field officer and the homing centre will be able to help.

    Hope this all helps!

  6. I'm sure by contacting a horse rescue near you will help you find one. If they dont already have one for adoption.

if you do not know of any rescue groups by you try this website www.petfinder.com

you are doing a wonderful think by fostering.
