Police in Toronto bullies?

My fiance and I wanted to go to Toronto for our honeymoon but I've heard that it's full of crime( more so that say, Niagara Falls) and that the police everywhere make it no fun. I haven't been there in years. Anybody visited lately? We're driving for northweatern Pennsylvania. Also--if we go, what is some cool stuff to check out?

  1. Compared to almost anywhere in the states, the police in toronto are hardly seen or heard from, though there are speedtraps on city roads. Speaking of driving, be extremely careful, the drivers are nuts or are new to driving and there's always a ton of interruptions. Toronto is about as safe as Fresno or San Diego or Seattle etc. or western penn? It's not crime free but you'll be pretty safe - just don't roam around at night alone. In essence Toronto is safe, efficient, ethnic - and almost boring. (!)

As for where to go, CN Tower, Center Island, Rogers Center, ROM, Yorkville (high end shops), St Lawrence Market (indoor market/food, antiques), Broadway show, countless restaurants (summerlicious), Eaton Centre, Wonderland, Sherway Gardens/Yorkdale Mall & many more.

  2. Toronto is the safest large city in all of North America. It's more safe than New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and even Montreal and Vancouver. But of course, this comparison is only to large cities. Toronto will sure have more crime than Niagara Falls since Toronto is a lot larger. It's like you're comparing Tokyo to a smaller town in Arkansas. You just can't.

  3. As far as police anywhere are concerned, it's the person and not the position they hold.

For Tourism, you can check out this site.

  4. The police are certainly not bullies in Toronto, or just about any other city in Canada. They have a very difficult job to do.

Look at the problems they are faced with. In Vancouver last year, police tasered a man at the airport who was behaving erratically, and the man subsequently died. In that case, they used a bit too much force to subdue him, and got their department in hot water because of it. Then this spring in Montreal, hockey fans riot in the streets because the police force was a bit less forceful and were too slow to react to a drunken crowd getting out of hand. It's hard to find a common ground.

On one hand, they are ambassadors to the city and are there to help people in need. On the other side, they must enforce the law and may approach you with a rough or forceful tone to make sure you are aware that they are in charge, if you have been too rowdy.

But the police in Ontario will most likely hardly be noticeable to you, unless you are speeding, run a red light, or something like that. They will not harass you, and you should not be afraid to approach them for help in an emergency, or even just to stop and ask for directions.

Of course, if during your honeymoon, your idea of "fun" is to get drunk, trash a bar, then yell and scream in the streets...Let's just say that will draw attention to you and the police may not be as friendly. But I expect them to always be professional.

  5. The crime isn't as bad as LA if thats what you're thinking, maybe only certain areas...

Then again, i doubt your honeymoon, will take you to Jane and finch, or rexdale.

    (bad areas)

I live on the outskirts of toronto and i go to toronto often, and i don't see or hear from any police at all...

The heart of the city is nice to be....alot of tourists go there, especially during this season.

    Niagara falls is favorite too.

Toronto has alot of different ethnic areas, theres like a Lil italy, Lil greece on danforth, lil persia, korea...ETC.

    The list goes on...

So yeah alot of different cafe's and restaurants and scenery for that matter.

But since you're kinda new.. I wouldn't really know because i lived here for a long time, so i'm like a local, its nothing special to me,..and you know...its always greener on the other side.

If you drive up north like 45 minutes from Toronto, there's alot of cottage country and that sort of stuff.

But its like a lil city, so you won't actually be "camping", i found that to be pretty cool, only if your into the Canadian wilderness landscape deal.

    Have fun!

  6. every large city  has its problems.  You only hear the bad  stories  . We have lived in   Vancouver  68+ years. the news has crime stories  but so far  im lucky

  7. Toronto is a large city and carries with it the inherent dangers of any large city. The Police if anything are polite and courteous especially if you are tourists. Take in a broadway style show Toronto is second only to New York for productions. Check the tourist sites to see who is coming to town while you're there maybe some musical group that you like is in town. Two hours north of Toronto is the Rama Casino. Slots- Tables etc. and they have some great shows as well. If the Jays are in town catch a ball game at the Rogers always a treat. There might be a festival while you're there Caribana is fun, g*y Pride week is a hoot even for straights.

Eat on the Danforth for Greek, South Asian, Downtown for Chinese, in little Italy for the best Italian food in or out of Italy. etc.

If you're there in the summer take the ferry to Centre Island and relax in a Downtown Park.

I don't live there anymore but still get back two or three times a year.

    Enjoy.
