Police promotion?Do newly promoted have to move?

Do policemen or policewomen in the UK who get promoted to a higher rank..e.g inspector to Chief inspector,have to move from the area or department to avoid conflicts of loyalties with former colleagues?

  1. i'm pretty sure you don't. but my dad's an officer in America, not the UK so im not to sure.

  3. It was usual in the UK in all services because your previous mates now had to accept orders from you and it was much easier for the freshly promoted man to be placed over a new set of men. However in these PC days I don't suppose it makes much difference, common sense has been replaced by ridiculous rulings.

  4. In the UK you will usually be moved on promotion, not only because of your loyalties but because you will be placed where a vacancy exists. This will usually be at a nearby station / division for lower ranks i.e.Sargent's and inspectors but could mean force moves for higher ranks such as chief inspector upwards.

    For example, the assistant chief of west mercia recently took over the post of chief of dyfed powys. Your career would move very slowly if you had to wait for for an opening in your station / force.
