  1. This could be considered as a use of deadly force, and should only be used in a last resort to stop a vehicle that is causing extreme danger to other persons.

  2. The reason the PIT manouver works is that it is intended to knock the rear wheels loose from the grip on the road surface.  The rear wheels have no steering control, so that recovery in nearly impossible, or, at least delayed.  The longer a car is out of control, the more likely it will collide with something that will put it out of commission.

The PIT is NOT intended to roll the car, although, that is always a possibility of a car is skidding sideways.

  3. Depends on how good the driving skills of the driver they are persuing are!

  4. Yes, although there is a higher chance of the person fleeing being able to avoid a crash. If performed correctly, the police vehicle will not only nudge, but ideally push the back end around, never allowing the stability control or traction control to aid the driver.

Traction control would likely not do much as it is only intended to keep drive wheels from spinning when the accelerator is pressed, although it would help to some extent. The largest aid would be the stability control, because it helps to correct over-steer and under-steer by braking 1 wheel to keep the vehicle in a more straight line, however, once the vehicle had been pushed beyond a point, there is no way the stability control would be able to correct for it. It is possible for a driver to counter this, move, but the technique is not easy and at high speed, if it is not performed correctly, it could result in serious injury or death, and would be hard to perform if you had a vehicle with stability control.

  5. Yes it would, it will completely knock those features out of service..........................

It is called the pit maneuver.....................
