  1. The things you need to do to become a Police Officer vary depending on where you are trying to get a job. Most US states now have some form of "Police Officer Standards & Training" criteria.

    Consider joining a Police Explorer post in your area (if you are still a teenager).Take classes in business and math/accounting, computer learning, science, foreign language and behavioral science. These will help to give you the type of skills you'll need as an officer.

    Check with local community colleges or state universities to see if they offer POST related classes. In some areas, it may be possible to take these classes before becoming employed as a Police Officer.

    Try to stay strong and fit. Participate in high school and college sports, if this helps you.Find something that works your mind and builds your mental fitness. When you are ready to look for a job, check your local newspapers, or one of the many law enforcement job sites on the web.

    Also , submit an application to the agency of your choice. After you submit an application, you will need to take a written exam. If you pass this, you will get called back for a physical agility test. This usually involves running, situps, pullups and other activities that simulate situations you might encounter on the job. If you pass the agility test, the next step will likely be an oral interview. After the oral interview, a background check is conducted, and if you pass that, you will be called back for the physical exam, drug testing, etc.. At the end of the process, your name will be placed on a list of candidates. Your position on the list is determined by a combination of your scores on the written and agility tests, and the scores given by the interview board.

  2. think it depends on where you live, but here;

    Must be at least 20 years and 6 months at time of written examination (contact a recruiter for minimum age exception).

    Maximum Age:

    Must not have reached 45 years of age at time of appointment to the Police Academy.

    Education:

    High School Diploma or

    G.E.D. plus 12 college hours.

    (Academic records must reflect a minimum overall grade point average of "C" of its numerical equivalent.)

    Military Service:

    Must have an Honorable Discharge.*

    (Uncharacterized and Entry-Level discharges may be accepted and will be assessed on an individual basis.)

    Citizenship:

    Must be a United States Citizen at the time of application.

  3. Depends on which agency you want to work for.  I think you can be hired and go to academy without a college degree.  But you cant become det, inv, or move up without college.  However, I know some county depts require no training at all (beyond academy).  Other law enforcement-- game wardens, park rangers, state agencies--I think they all require degrees.   Everyone has to go to academy, but if you have a degree you can go further than without one.  Call your local agencies and depts and see what they require.

  4. It differs depending on the police department.  Contact your local department and ask to speak to someone in their H.R. department.  They should be able to give you the information you need.  They should also have a website where you can start your application process and be able to see their minimum requirements.
