Policeman comes to Rory McIlroy's rescue
There was an unexpected hero for team Europe on Sunday, a policeman. Rory McIlroy was late for his match on the final day against Keegan Bradley. He was not actually late but he got confused due to the different time zones used in the States.
However, trooper, Pat Rollins was at the right place, at the right time. Pat radioed the intersections, which meant that McIlroy had a free run to Medinah Golf and Country Club.
It was all due to Rollins that the Irishman reached in time for his match against the rookie, Bradley.
This could have proved to be vital, had McIlroy been late. If the world number one had failed to reach in time, the match would have been awarded to team USA and so the Ryder Cup would have gone to the US as well.
The world number one later tweeted, thanking him for the help. He also posted a picture of himself and Rollins.
McIlroy eventually did make it in time and also had the time to take some dry swings before closing out Keegan Bradley 2&1.
The trooper later faced some criticism from the very hard core American fans. They said that if it had not been for him, Team USA would have won the Ryder Cup.
The point that McIlroy won would have awarded to USA, in case he had been unsuccessful to make it in time for the match.
Rollins is not to blame for the loss, as the Americans themselves gave away a record lead. The policeman only did what he has been trained to do all his life, help people.
He told the Daily Mirror, "They jokingly said if I hadn't, the USA would have won the Ryder Cup. "But the Ryder Cup should be settled on the course, not in traffic”.
He is right about this. Sporting events are to be decided on field not on the roads.
"We would have done the same for any American or European player, though I must admit it was extra special that he is the world number one".
"I'm a big golf fan and I knew who he was. It was a great event, an exciting event. I'm just glad I could play my small part".
