  1. Monroe Doctrine was practically a way for the U.S. to say "hands off" to Europe in terms of economic interests in Latin America and Asia.  U.S. policy toward Asia in the 1800-1900 period was that of the Open Door Policy, which basically told Europe: No spheres of influence, keep trade with China and Japan open to all powers.  

    While the M.D. was a bold statement, the U.S. was actually quite weak at the time that the M.D. was first brandished, but because of problems in Europe like the incessant warring between England and France, U.S. interests were largely safe from European intervention.
