Polish Open 2012: Toby Penty luckily escapes defeat in Men’s Singles round-of-16
England’s talented player Toby Penty struggled hard to penetrate into Men’s Singles quarter-final as he had to dig into his reserves to defeat Sergey Shumilkin of Russia in the round-of-16 showdown at the Polish Open 2012 on Friday, August 31, in Poland.
The passionate Toby, who is placed at number three in Men’s Singles main draw of the tournament, put in all of his skills to show exit to his lower ranked challenger in three games while taking 39 minutes on the court.
The third seeded Toby was in tremendous form in the opening set and took it easily but failed to make it a straight set victory as his rival won the second set. However, he remained successful in taking the final set to end up the match with a reasonable
margin on the board.
On the other hand, the in-form Sergey played to his maximum potential and remained successful in winning the second game. But he could not put up strong resistance against Toby in the final set and crashed out with a respectable score.
In the first game, Toby was just uncontrollable as he played with impressive precision and managed to take a spectacular advantage on court by setting up a huge lead on the board until the mid-game interval.
After the break, the English shuttler continued showing his remarkable skills on court and maintained pressure on his Russian opponent without showing him any mercy.
The higher ranked Toby remained confident and composed on court and he easily managed to win the game with a stunning 21-7 score on the board.
However, the situation was different in the second set when Sergey played positive badminton and stayed close to his rival until the break.
Toby tried to play attacking badminton after the break but he failed to put up strong show and lost the set with a margin of 18-21.
In the decider, Toby showed impressive performance on court and took a superb lead until the mid-game break.
After the interval, the English shuttler continued his positive run while taking the bird timely from all corners and snatched the game with a huge 21-12 score on the board.
The impressive Toby won this entertaining pre-quarter-final contest in 39 minutes with an interesting margin of 21-7, 18-21 and 21-12.
